Birding - Big Bear Lake

I have a new hobby in Big Bear... bird watching, listening, and planting for. In the process, I have heard a plethora of birds songs and sounds simultaneously - and wanted to be able to distinguish one from another.

Since researching and listening to various bird calls on several websites, I settled on a couple sites that are very specific to the San Bernardinos. Other regions will have specific birds endemic to that region, though the sightings of birds may overlap.

The following websites have been great sources of learning and enjoyment - each complementing the other:

Hummingbirds have a special place on my back deck and offer quiet enjoyment almost year round. Even in very cold times, if the feeder is not frozen, they will stop to refuel on their way to the desert. Some will winter in the eastern portions of the valley.

A couple of weeks ago, I observed a white-headed wookpecker (with just a touch of a red cap) feeding at the hummingbird feeder. Quite a shock seeing those larger birds perching and sipping that sweet nectar! Don't recall a mention of that in the fine print. In discussion with a friend from the east end of the valley, we discovered that both of us had observed this curious occurance.
